Matches at Murrayfield

He was virtually certainly selected for the final 31-man group due to his flexibility. However, after taking the pitch for the first hour of the 2nd of four warm-up Matches at Murrayfield versus France, Skinner was removed due to a hamstring injury. It wasn't the worst hamstring injury, but the timing was terrible a week before Gregor Townsend was supposed to announce his final team.

His chances of competing in the competition were dashed by a predicted four- to six-week recuperation period, and Skinner left for Exeter to start the lonesome process of recovery while clubmates Jonny Grey, Stuart Hogg, Luke Cowan-Dickie, Henry Slade, and Jack Nowell left for Japan.

He recalls spending recovery time in a Chief's dining area while everybody else was at practice. Sean Maitland scored a try off a cross-kick as I was observing us playing Samoa.

Sam Skinner remarked

"I was alone in that silent room, just waiting for us to score four scores since we had just lost to Ireland and wanted to win every game from that moment forward. I recall sitting by myself and witnessing the Rugby World Cup continue despite me."

If Skinner is philosophical regarding his mishap from four years prior, he has plenty of incentive to make sure he participates in the international conference in France this autumn after omitting out according to how he did.

“Certainly, going to a Rugby World Cup with Scotland is a huge ambition of mine, and I'm going to give it everything I've got. I can only exert what little influence I possess. If anything surprises me in that way, then it occurs; after all, that's just life, right? People have experienced worse situations.”

“The last time wasn't great, however, that is just a part of a professional game occasionally. I'm hoping that if I simply keep my head down and continue to work hard, I'll eventually find myself with a flight to France.”

Scotland’s Assets

Scotland presently boasts outstanding assets in the second row, so Skinner has an opportunity on his hands to make sure he gets the call. However, given his capacity to serve as a blindside as well, it would be surprising if he wasn't selected despite stiff competition, with the squad numbers increasing from 31 to 33 for this Rugby World Cup.

Recently, Richie Grey and Grant Gilchrist of Edinburgh have been in the lead with Jonny Grey, Skinner, and a fully recovered Scott Cummings following closely after. Leicester's ever-improving Cameron Henderson was also included in the larger Six Nations team.

Skinner, who is 28 years old, ought to have a minimum of one additional Rugby World Cup to work towards, although repeated failures have taught him not to plan too far ahead. This season, he has already lost more caps due to an unfortunate injury.

Skinner missed the autumn series

Skinner was chosen to play Scotland's first fall Test versus Australia in late October after a solid start with Edinburgh after his transfer north from Exeter last summer. However, he had to leave the game after just 24 minutes due to what was later determined to be a minor foot fracture, and he lost the remainder of the autumn series.

Skinner started playing once more in late December. After putting together a string of impressive performances, including wins in the Champions Cup over Castres and Saracens, he was added back to the team for the Six Nations. However, Skinner was only able to play for ten minutes off the bench versus France in Paris as Richie Gray's Test comeback was in full swing.

It wasn't until Gray's injury against Ireland that Skinner was selected to start Scotland's last match against Italy, earning his 25th cap, partnering Jonny Grey. Edinburgh's midseason slump in form means Friday's final-round URC match towards Ulster will be Skinner's last opportunity to make an impact in club colours.

Before the head trainer releases his practice team for the competition in advance of four warm-up Tests beginning in late July. If that proved Skinner remains very much in Townsend's opinion for a Rugby World Cup spot.

Skinner served in three straight championships

For Skinner, who played in three consecutive Twickenham championship games from 2018 to 2020 despite the latest taking place in October throughout a campaign prolonged by covid and whose stint at Exeter saw the team reach six consecutive English Premiership finals, this is uncharted ground.

As he thought about playing only his 14th club match of the year on Friday, he added, "I can't believe this seems like the briefest campaign of my life. I've played half as many matches as I did this time last year, and it's unusual to be in April and believe that the campaign will end the following week."

The Exeter-born attacker, whose dad is from Ayr, says he has "completely no regrets" about leaving his hometown for greener pastures despite the earlier-than-expected conclusion to Edinburgh's season.

I have enjoyed it, he declared. "I have a new beginning now that rugby and the rugby-related aspects of life are gone. I have thoroughly liked pushing myself in a new setting, getting to know new people, and seeing how other people do things. It has been quite amazing.”

“Edinburgh is a fantastic city and a fantastic place to call home. It's been great, but there's no denying the fact that as a team, we haven't been as effective as we all would have liked, and that's been difficult. Though we are dissatisfied we have no complaints at all because it was fantastic."

Mike Blair's resignation

Following Mike Blair's decision to resign as head trainer and the hiring of former Worcester manager Steve Diamond as a consultant in recent weeks, there has been a concern. Skinner thinks Blair has been "freed up" by Diamond's presence and now has "more time and vitality to invest into our campaign." The boys have enjoyed the fact that you can sense his presence more.”

Blair has stated that he wants to concentrate just on being a "world-class attack trainer," and it is obvious that the Edinburgh team is hopeful that he will remain in the Scotland capital, regardless of who the new head trainer is.

"I have no idea what he wants, but he has an outstanding connection with the performers," continued Skinner.

"We all feel the same way about Mike. He makes a great coach. We thank him a lot because he has given us an awful situation here. I would do anything to keep Mike working at the club."

Skinner will closely monitor how some of the "friends for life" he established at Exeter handle their difficult Champions Cup semi-final matchup versus La Rochelle later this month during a four-week break after some end-of-season assessments before his sights move to Rugby World Cup 2023.

When the three-month build-up starts at the beginning of June with the first of several summer training camps targeted towards Scotland trying to navigate a notoriously challenging group that also includes Ireland and South Africa, Skinner should be more rested than most.

"It's fantastic that they want us to be ready to accomplish our objectives right immediately and have a clear rugby emphasis leading up to the Rugby World Cup, according to the broad consensus. I'm prepared to leave."
