What to Expect Before and After Tummy Tuck Surgery

Posted by Mr. Sultan Hassan on July 13th, 2016

A tummy tuck or abdominoplasty is one of the most popular cosmetic procedures in the world. In 2013, over 3,000 tummy tuck procedures were administered in the UK for both men and women. A tummy tuck is a major surgery, and you should never undergo it without fully understanding the consequences of this procedure and setting realistic expectations.

Before a tummy tuck surgery, expect your plastic surgeon to do a thorough assessment of your case first. Not all patients are ideal candidates for this procedure. Some are simply not healthy enough to get a tummy tuck. Yes, health is a major concern when it comes to plastic surgery. For example, smoking can hinder the healing process, so plastic surgeons refrain from giving tummy tucks to smokers. If you are a smoker, the surgeon might ask you to stop smoking for several weeks or months before the tummy tuck surgery.

Your plastic surgeon may also turn you down simply because a tummy tuck might not be the best procedure for you. For example, if you have more fat around your belly than usual, a liposuction may be required. If you do not have enough loose skin in the abdominal area, then you might not need a tummy tuck at all.

If you do happen to be a good candidate for tummy tuck, you should be aware of what may happen after surgery. This is a serious procedure that involves a long downtime. For starters, you need to stay at least two nights in the hospital after the surgery. You will be experiencing pain and discomfort for about a week or two and you definitely need to take time off work for about three weeks. It is very common for post-op tummy tuck patients to experience temporary numbness and skin irregularity, fluid collection, and bruising. You will also be required to stay in bed for as long as possible to speed up recovery and might not even be allowed to walk for half a month. Exercising, with the exception of swimming and sit-ups, can only be done after four weeks. You are required to book follow-ups with your plastic surgeon a week, two weeks, and three months after the surgery to ensure that you are healing properly. A scar will definitely appear after the tummy tuck surgery, but its appearance should improve after around 18 months.
