Hoi An's Floating Lanterns - A Photographer's Dream

Posted by andrewpaul on May 19th, 2023

The enchanting streets of Hoi An's Old Town turn into a fairytale setting when all the neon lights go off. Pretty lanterns bob along the Hoai River as locals make wishes for happiness, health and love. It's a magical and moving scene that has earned  Hoi An Photographer  the nickname, 'The Lantern City'.

There are several ways to experience this spectacular event, from a romantic lantern boat cruise on the river to a visit at a local home where you can learn to make your own lanterns. You can also join dedicated group tours that are specially designed for the full moon Lantern Festival.

Regardless of whether you join a guided tour or not, you'll find it's a wonderful time to stroll around the ancient streets and record some impressive photos of the lanterns against the backdrop of twinkling moonlight. The atmosphere is a bit more crowded than normal, but you'll be well looked after by the friendly locals and it's a chance to soak in this unique celebration of Vietnamese culture.

A highlight of the night is Bai Choi, a traditional performance that was added to UNESCO's Intangible Heritage list in 2017. It's a fun and entertaining show with music and poetry readings that convey the pride people take in their cultural history. If you can, join in the singing, drawing and laughing to get deeply absorbed by the joyous spirit of this unique celebration.
