Whether on purpose or by accident, the Springboks want to govern South Africa and rule the world in 2023, much as Napoleon Bonaparte did when he left the French island of Corsica.

Training session in Bestia

Jacques Nienaber, the Springboks' head coach, said on Friday that his team will hold a pre-Rugby World Cup training in Bastia, on the Mediterranean island's rugged interior. The Boks intend to arrive in Europe and mainland France a bit earlier this time to get ready for the France Rugby World Cup 2023, following a page from their 2019 strategy in Japan RWC.

South Africa hopes to repeat their performance from 2019 when they were the first team to arrive in Japan and the last to go. After their final exhibition game versus New Zealand on Friday, August 25, at Twickenham, the Boks will depart for Corsica.

To prepare for their France Rugby World Cup 2023 opening against Scotland on Saturday, September 10, they will remain on the island through Sunday, September 1, when they will depart for their headquarters in Toulon, France, in the south of the country.

The All Blacks remained on the island before the RWC 2007 in France for the sake of their preparations. However, that tournament ended in humiliation when they were eliminated by the hosts in the Rugby World Cup quarterfinals.

Jacques Nienaber remarked

"The Corsica camp will be ideal for our teammates to acclimatise to the environment in France while sharpening our preparations for the opening Rugby World Cup encounter, affirms Nienaber.

"We experienced the benefits of our time in Japan before the 2019 Rugby World Cup, and we're hopeful that this camp will be just as successful in acclimating the players to the French environment. "I'm grateful that the Corsica Rugby League and the Corsican Executive Council invited us to participate in this important camp.

Jubilant campers

Nienaber was speaking after a brief training session in Durban with a small group of 15 RWC hopefuls. They excluded several players from abroad clubs as well as the Stormers players who would compete in the United Rugby Championship (URC) final the following weekend. Nienaber stated that he was pleased with the group's accomplishments at the first of two training camps held in Durban this month as they prepare to compete internationally in the France Rugby World Cup 2023.

Goals of these camps

“The main objectives of the camp, which finished on Friday, aimed to get the performers into Test condition following their club and franchise responsibilities in order to make them ready for the upcoming season that would culminate at the Rugby World Cup 2023 in France.

Since coming together in Durban on Tuesday night, the team has participated in five field practice sessions and numerous off-field practices. The second camp for training, which takes place in Durban as well, will go from May 29 to May 31.

As we get ready for this crucial season, "this session was important for getting our players and trainers on the same page about our frameworks and systems," stated Nienaber.

Etzebeth and Kolisi are also at the camp

Captain Siya Kolisi (with knee) and Eben Etzebeth (with shoulder) attended the training despite their chronic injuries. Kolisi has an equal likelihood of making it to the France Rugby World Cup after having surgery earlier this month to repair a damaged anterior cruciate ligament.

Etzebeth, who suffered his injury towards the end of the Sharks' URC campaign, is anticipated to be ready for the four-year championship in plenty of time.
