Olympic Paris 2024 comes up with stringent entry standards for track & field competitions

Recently, the World Athletics announced a revised qualification method for athletics in the Paris 2024 Olympics. However, this has raised concerns among Indian athletes due to the stricter criteria. According to the new standards, it is projected that only four Indian athletes would meet the qualification requirements based on their current performances.

In the previous season, just four Indian athletes achieved performances that are anticipated to meet the entry criteria for their respective events. These athletes include Priyanka Goswami, Murali Sreeshankar, Avinash Sable, and Neeraj Chopra, all in the javelin throw and 20 km racewalk disciplines. Athletes aiming to qualify for the Paris 2024 have two options available to them.

The first is meeting the entrance standard, which will account for half of the qualification spots. The second option is through the global rankings, which will determine the other half of the spots. The qualification season for events like the 10,000 meters, combination events, race walks, and relays begins on December 31, 2022, while for all other individual events, it starts on July 1, 2023.
