Precision Turned Parts

Precision Turned Parts are articles and items which have been manufactured using some form of spinning or turning device. This turning device is known as a lathe.

There are many different types of lathe which are used in industry and some of these are:

o Centre lathe

o CNC lathe

o Wood turning lathe

Lathes are used for machining articles of many different sizes using a vast range of materials.

These materials may vary from soft plastics to extremely hard and toughened metals, and some of these materials will include:

o Plastics

o Steel

o Aluminum

o Copper

All these different materials and many more may be precision turned on a lathe, however some materials require a specific type of lathe and the correct tooling to achieve this. While many lathes can be manually operated or CNC controlled, there are numerous other types of lathe which can operate by being both CNC controlled and manually operated.

Lathes are machines which are used for revolving a piece of metal so that a cutting tool can shape it into a component. This may be of circular cross section or to carry out a screw cutting operation. Lathes are very important amongst machine tools, and vary widely in their design, but common to them all is the rotational motion that enables a tool to cut away material. The tool is given appropriate combinations of linear movements.

The centre lathe is very widely used and can also be known as the engine lathe, and the workpiece is held or fixed between two centres or held tightly in a chuck. The speed of rotation of the spindle determines the cutting speed of the tool, and this is extremely important because various types of material require different cutting speeds, for example; aluminium being a soft metal can be turned at very fast speeds when compared to some toughened stainless steels which require much slower cutting speeds.

The speed of the spindle is controlled by a gearbox. On CNC lathes the gearbox is computer controlled, while on centre lathes which are manually operated this achieved by manual selection and may be implemented by the use of a lever.

The most favourable cutting speeds depend on the properties of the material and the type of cutting tool which is employed.
