Weight Loss Surgery Can Be Lifesaving

There is a huge body of evidence that points to a connection between obesity and life-threatening illnesses. Being overweight has been strongly linked to the development of type 2 diabetes, some forms of cancer, heart disease and a host of other conditions. There is also a great deal of evidence that supports the benefits of weight loss surgery for helping people who are obese shed pounds. But, can this type of intervention have an impact on morbidity rates?

Researchers are finding that the answer is yes. A recent study looked into the histories of nearly 50,000 patients who were obese. Just under half of the patients underwent weight loss surgery. The remaining did not. As it turned out, the morality rate was higher in the non-surgical group at 4.21 percent. The surgical group had a mortality rate of 1.1 percent. The follow up rate was about 5.4 years for the surgical group and about 5.5 years for the non-surgical group. The numbers showed a decreased mortality rate of about 57 percent for the surgical group as compared with the non-surgical group.

Obesity has reached epidemic proportions in the United States with an estimated one third of the population – children included – considered obese. Shedding pounds can dramatically improve overall health while greatly reducing the risk for a host of potentially fatal conditions. People who are obese will find bariatric surgery is generally considered an option of last resort. It is strongly recommended to try healthy eating plans and exercise first.

If weight loss surgery is indicated, people will find a number of options available. From the permanent gastric bypass to temporary balloon procedures, people who are obese do not have to face this challenge alone. Those who are concerned about their weight are urged to speak with their healthcare providers. Help is available for those who seek it out.
