Eyelid Surgery - The Best Solution to Treat Your Droopy Eyelids

Eyelid Surgery or blepharoplasty might just be what you need to deal with your droopy eyelids and gain a more youthful and alert appearance. But like any patient, you must have a lot of questions in your mind. What exactly happens during an eyelid surgery? How long is the recovery time? What are the possible complications of blepharoplasty? In this article, we will discuss all the basics you need to know.

What to Expect
Blepharoplasty or eyelid surgery aims to tighten any sagging skin around your eyes not only to make you look better, but also to improve your vision by removing the obstruction caused by droopy eyelids. This procedure essentially removes excess skin as well as muscles and sometimes fat from the eyelids. Depending on your case, the surgeon might only remove skin but not muscle. You might need this surgery done on just the upper eyelids, just the lower eyelids, or both upper and lower eyelids. The procedure will take anywhere from one to three hours, and final results are visible after four to 28 to 42 days.

Cosmetic blepharoplasty (done solely for improving appearance) may be done by ophthalmologists as well as oculoplastic surgeons. Functional blepharoplasty (done for medical reasons) is usually performed by oculoplastic surgeons and ophthalmologists. If you are interested in blepharoplasty, schedule an appointment with an oculoplastic surgeon who can evaluate your condition.

Recovery Time
Following an eyelid surgery, you may be given topical antibiotic ointments. During the first few days of your recovery, your surgeon might also require you to apply cold packs on your eyes every few hours for about 10 minutes at a time. You might also be given pain medication if needed. Expect some discomfort, but the pain should be tolerable. If the pain become severe or if changes in your vision occur, call your surgeon immediately.

During recovery, you can expect your eye area to be bruised and swollen. The sclera (white part of the eyes) may likewise become bloodshot. You will eventually heal after a few weeks.

Possible Complications
Some people (though a very small percentage) are temporarily unable to close their eyelids completely after surgery, causing the eyes to become dry. Such a condition typically resolves after a month or a few weeks. Humidifiers and eye drops may help. Your eyes might be taped closed so you can sleep at night.

Other possible complications include retraction of the eyelid, scarring, tearing, change in the eye shape, etc. Your oculoplastic surgeon should be able to explain all the risks to you.
