When you like a particular restaurant and visit there often, it means the menu items they offer are exactly what you are looking for. And it takes a certain amount of trust as well to visit one place again and again. Besides the taste and presentation of menu items, what is really important for a good eating out joint is the kind of ingredients they have sourced.

Take McDonald’s for example, the ingredients that they use, are sourced from only those supplier that share the brand’s commitment for safety. The brand would rather discontinue using a particular ingredient, than using something that doesn’t meet the quality checks.

Tomatoes that are used at McDonald's restaurants are of top quality and utmost care is taken to ensure that they adhere to the brand's safety guidelines. But tomatoes are tricky. It’s easy to spoil tomatoes. They are fragile and need a lot of care not just while handling, but also during the cultivation process.

There are two common pests that can infect tomatoes - Fruit Borers and Fruit Flies. While it’s easy to spot fruit borers, fruits flies are difficult to notice as the spotting disappears after a while.

To control the development of fruit flies, appropriate measures are taken right from point where seeds are selected. In coordination with seed companies, only those seeds are selected that are resistant to pests and diseases. Once cultivated, all off grade, under ripe and over ripe tomatoes are discarded. Certain random batches are sent for slice test and if a tomato fails the test, the entire batch is discarded.

Once these tomatoes reach McDonald's outlets, they are inspected before getting stored. McDonald's staff is trained to identify infected tomatoes. Tomatoes are checked post slicing as well. Managers and crew members are trained to understand all critical food safety measures and periodic audits are also conducted.

Every possible measure is taken to ensure that good quality ingredients make it into your burger. There are quality checks at every level failing even a single one of which can lead to rejection of fresh produce. McDonald's takes food safety very seriously. This is one of the top reasons how the brands gives a consistent experience to its guests across the globe.
