Researchers Gain Insights on How Bariatric Surgery Benefits Diabetics

A number of studies have shown that weight loss surgery can help some type 2 diabetics reverse their condition. Although not a guarantee with the procedure, those who are obese and suffer from diabetes are likely to notice at least a marked improvement in their blood sugar numbers following surgery. While the potential benefits have been shown, researchers didn’t have a clear understanding of just what happens in the body following surgery to promote remission or symptom improvement. After all, weight loss alone doesn’t fully account for the condition’s improvement.

New research is showing that patients who undergo bariatric surgery to promote weight loss also experience changes in the composition of gut microorganisms. Researchers now believe these changes may play a role in the promotion of diabetes remission. The study noted a decrease in pathogenic bacteria in the stomach following surgery and an increase in microflora that were deemed beneficial. This change coincided with the start of improved glycemic control, researchers said.

In addition to changing the composition of gut microorganisms, weight loss surgery has been shown to help lower inflammation in the body. Inflammation is believed to play a role in the development of type 2 diabetes. It is also connected to a number of obesity-related cancers.

Obesity is linked with a number of serious health conditions, including type 2 diabetes. Losing weight can dramatically reduce the risks of the disease developing. A number of studies have shown that type 2 diabetics who undergo weight loss surgery, such as a gastric bypass, are likely to notice improvements in the disease, if not total remission. The biggest benefits have been noted in diabetics who undergo weight loss surgery within a few years of the disease’s onset.

People who are obese are urged to talk with their healthcare providers about their weight loss options. Losing weight can improve conditions, such as diabetes, while improving overall health in the process. Bariatric surgery is typically recommended for those who have a body mass index of 40 or higher or those with a BMI of 35 and other conditions, such as diabetes.
