How to Measure Your Kitchen Accurately to Keep Your Kitchen Redesign Smooth

Posted by SummitCabinets on August 26th, 2016

Measuring a kitchen's dimensions is not as simple as taking one wall's width and multiplying it by four. Kitchens are never perfect cubes. However, it's also not as daunting a task as a contractor may have you believe.

You can measure your kitchen yourself to help your kitchen remodel designers get the right estimates from the get-go. If you are starting a kitchen remodel in Corona, CA, this is the way to begin:

1) Measure Your Walls

First, you'll need to measure your walls separately, all the way around your kitchen. Use a standard tape measure to go from one corner all the way to the opposite side of that wall and record your measurements. (Write it down - your designers will appreciate the security it provides over simply going off memory.)

Note: it would be most helpful to draw a diagram of your kitchen out on a piece of paper that you can label with your measurements. Make sure you label your diagram correctly!

2) Measure the Openings

Next, you'll need to measure any windows and doors. Measure all sides, and don't forget to include the window sills and door frames! Label these on your diagram.

3) Check In: Your Diagram Thus Far

Your diagram should now include the full length of the walls and the dimensions of your doors and windows. At this point, you will also need to measure out the distance from each opening to the end of the wall on each side.

Be sure to measure vertically as well as horizontally. Your kitchen exists in three dimensions, not two.

4) Consider Ceiling Height

Take a few measurements here, especially if the kitchen you are remodeling has a sloped ceiling. Label your diagram with the smallest measurement, and be sure you measure from a finished floor, not the sub-floor.

5) Measure Counters and Appliances

You'll want to measure your new appliances and counters (or the old ones, if you are keeping them). If any of these are fixed, measure the distance they are in relation to outlets, windows, doors, etc. and record your measurements.

6) Check Again

The rule in carpentry is measure twice, cut once. This should be your rule of thumb. Check to be sure you've included plumbing fixtures, outlets, and light switches in your considerations.

Undoubtedly your designers and contractors will also check for themselves, but the more accurate measurements you can provide everyone from the early stages, the smoother your redesign will be.

Measuring your own kitchen is something you can do, and having the knowledge and skill will give you a bigger bargaining chip when negotiating prices. If you still need assistance, contact Summit Cabinets in Corona.
