Once inside the macrophages, clodronate inhibits farnesyl pyrophosphate synthase, a vital enzyme involved in the mevalonate pathway. This pathway is essential for producing isoprenoids, which are crucial for the function and survival of macrophages. By disrupting this pathway, clodronate induces apoptosis, resulting in the elimination of macrophages in the bursal sac.
