While acute components (such as neutrophil infiltration) predominate when compared to CIA, the CAIA model exhibits similar clinical and histologic characteristics and concurrently involves significant features of human RA, such as inflammatory synovitis, the formation of pannus (an aggressive fibrovascular tissue that invades the joint), cartilage destruction, and bone resorption.

The model can be applied to strains or genotypes that are not genetically susceptible for CIA, which is one specific benefit of CAIA over CIA. Furthermore, unlike CIA, CAIA is a fast model (peak illness within 8 days after onset in 48 hours), with a high uptake rate, synchronicity, and no effect from Freund's adjuvant—an immune system-affecting substance used in the CIA model.
