Unified Communications | Local area networks

Split Horizon has continued its successful involvement in providing technology solutions to Western Australia's health care industry. Following on from the successful design and commissioning of the Local Area Network (LAN), data centre and voice/video systems at Perth's new public health campus located in the southern region of Perth, Western Australia, Split Horizon has now committed to delivery of a Unified Communications solution for the new children's hospital scheduled to open at the end of 2016.

The design for the children's hospital's Unified Communications systems is to provide the following primary goals:

  • Improve patient care using leading-edge technology
  • Enable doctors and medical staff around the world to consult with patients using real-time integrated video
  • Provide care and treatment to patients who do not have regular access to healthcare professionals, specialists or medical facilities, such as those living in remote communities

The Unified Communications solution provided by Split Horizon is based on Cisco System's suite of communication and collaboration products - Cisco Unified CallManager for IP telephony, UCCX for call centre and Jabber for instant messaging. These products work seamlessly and integrate into Perth Children's Hospital's data centre and private cloud infrastructure to provide integrated voice, video and messaging to the new facility as well as integrating with the rest of Western Australia's public health systems across the Wide Area Network (WAN).

Doctors, nurses and consultants will be able to collaborate using cutting-edge conferencing and interaction facilities that will allow them not just to talk with each other, but see real-time video, instantly message across platforms and interactively share documents and workflows. The Unified Communications platform will improve the efficiency and effectiveness of patient care by providing access to relevant information, and specialist skills, regardless of geography or time zone. Furthermore, teaching opportunities are made possible, allowing the next generation of doctors and nurses to gain valuable exposure mentors and teachers.

Split Horizon was previously involved in the design, commissioning and transition to managed service of the Unified Communications and Local area networks environments in Perth’s largest tertiary hospital. The Unified Communications system was similarly built on Cisco Systems technologies, with the LAN environment utilised route/switch products from Cisco in providing a multi-tenant data centre and campus network to support the 6000 staff and over 750 patient beds.

Split Horizon Pty Ltd is based in Perth, Western Australia and has extensive experience across a number of Information and Communications Technology areas. As well as expertise in Unified Communications, Split Horizon provides LAN/WAN services, public and private cloud design with data centre technologies, and emerging areas of interest including Software-Defined Networks (SDN) and the Internet of Things (IoT). Split Horizon provides engineering and design as well as managed IT services to government, finance, oil/gas and mining industries throughout Australia and aims to use technology to help its clients achieve and surpass its business goals.
