NEET 2024 Re-Exam: Essential Information for 1,563 Students on June 23

Posted by IIB on June 20th, 2024

The Supreme Court of India has granted permission to the National Testing Agency (NTA) to re-conduct the NEET 2024 exam. This decision addresses the issue of grace marks awarded to 1,563 students due to time mismanagement at six examination centers on May 5, 2024.

NEET 2024 Re-Exam Schedule and Details

The re-exam is scheduled for June 23, 2024, with no changes to the existing counselling process or dates. Participation in the re-exam is optional for the 1,563 affected students. Those opting out will have their scorecard marks adjusted by deducting the previously awarded grace marks.

Impact of NEET Re-Exam on Counselling Process

A common concern among students is whether the NEET re-exam will impact the counselling schedule. According to the NTA, counselling for NEET 2024 will commence on July 6, 2024, following the release of re-exam results on June 30, 2024. Candidate rankings will be re-evaluated, and the 67 candidates who initially shared the highest rank due to grace marks will receive ranks based on their original scores without grace marks.

Understanding the Compensatory Marks in NEET Exam Results

The controversy began with multiple writ petitions and representations from candidates, prompting the NTA to take serious action. A Grievance Redressal Committee, consisting of examination and academic experts, was established to review and address these complaints.

The committee examined grievances using factual reports and CCTV footage from the affected exam centers. Candidates who lost examination time were compensated with marks based on their efficiency and the time lost, following a formula established by a court ruling on June 13, 2018, in W.P. 551 of 2018. As a result, 1,563 candidates received revised marks ranging from -20 to 720, with two top scores of 718 and 719.

The CCTV footage confirmed that the examination integrity at these centers remained uncompromised.

The Supreme Court's decision to allow a re-exam on June 23, 2024, is a victory for the students who faced discrimination.
