After the commencement of their tournament with a rain-out against Scotland in Barbados, which, followed by a downfall to Australia, left England on the margin of exclusion, the holders managed to turn things around to squeeze into the Super 8s and then clinch a final four spot. However, the weather forecast is again unfavorable for their Thursday semi-final against India in Guyana.

So what could this mean for England's chances of defending their title? We goal to interrupt it all down for you. According to the Met Office, as of Tuesday, the weather forecast for Thursday in Guyana currently predicts thundershowers changing to heavy showers by late morning, with a 60 percent chance of rain.

Guyana hosted five matches in the initial group stage of the tournament, none of which were washed out, although the last of them took place over two weeks ago on June 8. Regarding the first semi-final between South Africa and Afghanistan in Trinidad on Wednesday. The Met Office forecasts light showers changing to clear by early evening, around the time the match is set to begin.

T20 World Cup Semi-final Schedule and Rules Overview

There is no reserve day allocated for the second semi-final between England and India, although an additional 250 minutes is available to attempt to complete the match on the scheduled day. This means that if the game cannot be finished due to bad weather, India will progress by topping their Super 8s pool.

The first semi-final between South Africa - who led Group 2 - and Afghanistan, on Wednesday evening in Trinidad, does have a reserve day scheduled for Thursday. Section 13.6.2.1 of the ICC's playing conditions for the tournament states: The Final on 29 June will have a stand-in day on 30 June. The semi-finals will each have extra time allocated to finish the match, totaling 250 minutes.

For the first semi-final on 26 June, 60 minutes will be presented at the end of the day's play, with the continuing 190 minutes scheduled for 2 pm on 27 June. Meanwhile, the extra 250 minutes for the second semi-final scheduled on 27 June will be used if necessary through long playing hours on the scheduled day.

It was predetermined that if India advanced to the final four of the tournament, they would play in the second semi-final as it is at a more convenient time for their country's TV audience. None of India's matches in the competition have been scheduled at the time of the first semi-final. With India finishing as winners of Group 1 in the Super 8s and England as runners-up in Group 2, this arrangement ensured they would be placed into the second semi-final.

T20 World Cup 2024 Semi-final Disparity and Scheduling Concerns

England and India's semi-final doesn't have a reserve day. If there's rain during that match, the team that finished first in their group advances. The complexities of the organization have put pressure on the management of the tournament, resulting in the two semi-finals being played under slightly different rules and regulations.

Furthermore, India knew all along that they would be in Guyana for the semi-final, allowing them to plan accordingly. Their logistics were already in place, giving Indian supporters a chance to travel to Georgetown. England fans won't have that opportunity because it's so last minute. One team was aware in advance of their participation in that semi-final, and I find the situation far from ideal.

Having two semi-finals with differing playing conditions, where one has a reserve day and the other does not, is problematic. The first semi-final effectively spans two days, or a day and a half. In contrast, the England-India match allows for play throughout a single day with a total of 250 minutes available for makeup time. We could arrive at 8 am for a 10.30 am start and still be there at 10 pm trying to complete that match! The second semi-final begins at 10.30 am because the players, teams, and officials need to then fly to Barbados for the final on Saturday. The scheduling favors India due to the viewership in India, which represents the largest audience for the ICC International Cricket Council.

T20 World Cup Final Journey and Semi-final Disappointment

This includes not only India but also Bangladesh, Pakistan, and that region. In my opinion, the initial stages of the tournament seemed to drag on a bit, with lengthy intervals the matches could have been scheduled closer together. Instead, at the critical stage, there's just one day between a crucial second semi-final and the final.

England was eliminated from the T20 World Cup following a cancellation of their semi-final against India due to heavy rain in Sydney. Once more, there was no contingency day planned, enabling India to advance to the final by topping their group, while England secured their place as runners-up after an initial defeat to South Africa.

Hosts and eventual champions Australia, who finished second to India in their group, seemed poised for a similar situation, with both semi-finals initially scheduled at the same venue on the same day until the weather improved enough to secure their spot in the final by defeating South Africa. After England's chances of advancing to the Super 8s were on the brink following the Scotland rain-out and loss to Australia.

They then demolished Oman dismissing the associate nation for 47 runs before completing the chase in just 19 balls, significantly boosting their net run rate above that of Scotland's. They subsequently avoided the rain and defeated Namibia in Antigua, comfortably securing a 10-over-a-side victory by 41 runs on DLS after initially fearing the match would be washed out, which could have ended their tournament hopes.
