Best Vein Centers in Washington DC: Mistakes

Posted by jackanderson493 on September 13th, 2016

As one of the best vein centers in Washington DC, we are dedicated to helping people overcome vein problems, whether those problems are the unattractiveness of spider veins and varicose veins or the dangerous complications of more serious vein diseases such as deep vein thrombosis (DVT). And we literally love what we do, but there is one aspect of what we do that is sometimes frustrating, because year after year we see patients making the same mistakes and – as a result – making their conditions worse.

First, don't take your vein health for granted – get a vein screening today!

Vein disease is so common that over 50% of the adult population has some form of it. But if you were to ask most "people on the street" whether they've ever had a venous health screening, most of them would say "No." This is a mistake, because 1) venous health screenings are fast, painless, and take only about an hour, 2) screenings can detect vein diseases at an early stage when they can be treated using conservative methods, and 3) even if you don't have vein disease yet, screenings can detect whether you are at risk for it, and help prevent it.

Second, after your screening, follow your vein doctor's advice

This seems like so obvious a statement that many people wonder why we have to say it. After all, if you went to a heart doctor and he detected some problems and told you that you needed a certain treatment or preventative regimen, you'd actually do it, right? But as Washington DC vein specialists, we see the opposite.

Patients come to us and, after a screening and full examination, we tell them that they have vein disease, give them our recommendations for what would be the best way to treat it, and – most important – we tell them what will happen if they don't get treatment. And then these patients walk out the door and we don't see them for months. They don't get that varicose veins are a "real" disease, and they choose to ignore what we tell them about what will happen if they don't get treatment for it.

You can make another type of mistake even if you don't have vein disease

One of the most common mistakes we see our patients make is when we tell them that they don't have varicose veins or other vein disease YET, but they have high risk factors that make it likely that they will develop it if they don't change risky behaviors like inactivity, being overweight, or smoking. Naturally, we prescribe things like diet and exercise and lifestyle changes that will reduce these risk factors and help keep them healthy, but again, a certain percentage of patients ignore these prescriptions, and then wonder a couple of years later why they have developed varicose veins. This is yet another mistake.

So what should you do instead?

First, seek qualified vein disease treatment in Washington DC, and second, pay attention to what the doctor tells you. If he recommends conservative treatment like weight loss, getting more exercise, and wearing compression stockings, do it. If your doctor feels that the best treatment option is to remove your diseased veins, you should consider it – not just for "cosmetic reasons," but because it could literally save your life. If you have any questions about any of this, or about your personal medical condition, please give Dr. Hamza Rana a call today at 301-637-3088 and set up an appointment for your own venous health screening. You'll be happy you did.
