PCR Testing Leads Legionella Market as Demand Surges with Aging Population

Posted by Aryan on October 1st, 2024

The legionella testing market is expected to grow at a rate of 9.0% in the coming years, reaching a value of USD 554 million by 2030. The primary drivers of this growth are the rising cases of Pontiac fever, Legionnaire’s disease, and pneumonia.

The market's expansion is also attributed to the aging population, as older individuals are more vulnerable to legionella infections due to weakened immune systems and pre-existing conditions such as hypertension, diabetes, chronic kidney disease, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).

PCR (polymerase chain reaction) was the dominant testing method in the past and remains widely used for detecting legionella bacteria. This is because PCR delivers results within a day and is highly accurate, specific, and sensitive. It is often considered superior to urinary antigen tests for legionella detection, as a positive PCR result targeting the 5S rRNA sequence confirms the presence of legionella DNA. Moreover, PCR is regarded as the most specific and sensitive technique for detecting Legionella pneumophila.

In line with this, companies are increasingly adopting rapid PCR methods for legionella detection. For instance, in January 2023, EMSL Analytical Inc. introduced a rapid PCR and traditional culturing method for detecting legionella in the environment, aiming to prevent the spread of Legionnaire’s disease.

Among end users, diagnostic centers held the largest market share, exceeding 41%, in the past. This is driven by the growing awareness of early diagnosis for legionella-related illnesses. Additionally, the demand for legionella testing products is increasing among water treatment agencies due to the need for on-site testing methods, driven by stringent water safety regulations.

In terms of geography, North America led the legionella testing market with a 44% share in 2022, driven by the rising number of legionella cases and healthcare infrastructure development. In the U.S. alone, 8,000–18,000 individuals are hospitalized annually with Legionnaire’s disease. Europe follows closely behind, expected to grow at a rate of 8.1% by 2030 due to government-approved testing kits and awareness initiatives, which fuel the demand for related products.

Given the global increase in cases of pneumonia and fever, the demand for legionella testing is projected to rise steadily in the years ahead.
