Applications of Ring Forging

Posted by Ramparkesh Joshi on September 30th, 2016

Different types of forgings items are used in a variety of industries for many applications. Among all the forging items, it is the ring forgings that are most common. Ring Forgings are made from a variety of materials, like stainless steel, carbon, and alloy. Right from the oil industry to aerospace industry, almost every major industry uses ring forgings in many applications.

Let us have a look at some of the most common uses of ring forgings mentioned below-

1. Manufacturing

A large number of equipment and machines used in industrial manufacturing units require ring forgings to prevent untimely wear and tear. They are used in the tension areas of vehicles, like steering arms, kingpins, joints, and gears. Pipes and valves require these forged components to minimize the chances of corrosion because of high pressure that passes through them. Moreover, Ring forging manufacturers now manufacture these rings as per the specific needs of their clients.

2. Oil Extraction

Many different types of forged components, like ring forgings, forged valves, and cylinders are used in the oil extraction process. Apart from extracting oil, the forged components also play an integral role in the transportation of raw oil extracted from the ground. Allow steel forgings are usually used in these applications as they are known for their durability and ability to prevent rust.

3. Aerospace

Structural reliability and strength-to-weight ratio are two of the aspects that influence range, performance and payload ability of an aircraft. As a result, forged components, including ring forgings made from many different special alloys, ferrous and non-ferrous materials are used in military aircraft, helicopters, spacecraft, and commercial jets. Right from the landing gear struts and cylinders to the arresting hooks, these components are used abundantly.

4. Agricultural Equipment and Machinery

Toughness, strength, and cost-efficiency are some of the factors taken into consideration while making farm equipment and machines. To get the desired outcome, forged components are very commonly used in them. Not just the transmission and engine components, forgings are used in levers, shafts, gears, and cultivator shafts too.

5. Shipbuilding and Ordnance

You can find forged components in almost every defence implement, right from drive shafts of submarines to rifle triggers. Missiles, shells, heavy tanks, and many other heavy artilleries use a variety of forged components. Moreover, they are also very commonly used in the commercial shipbuilding process to enhance the load bearing capability and performance.

These are some of the most common applications of ring forgings. Right from their durability, flexibility, cost-effectiveness to the freedom of getting them created in a variety of materials, there are a number of reasons that make ring forgings suitable for a wide-range of applications.
