What are IoT Security & Internet of Things (IoT)?

IoT is likely to be constrained by security issues. There will be an unbelievable amount of devices, and some will be capable of disrupting society and even causing death.

There are so many devices that there are major security concerns. They can be programmed to send traffic to a particular destination. Both criminals and intelligence agencies have already used cameras and microphones on connected devices to spy on individuals. Such an event is not theoretically possible; it occurs frequently.

How will society solve this problem?

It is possible for the society to approach the problem in several ways.

Outright banning of IoT is unlikely, since digitalization is beneficial and necessary for economic growth.

Regulations on minimum levels of security may be combined with certification.

Personal injury, wrongful death, and product liability litigation resulting in substantial civil liability.

Liability insurance companies may require a certain level of security (possibly coupled with certification) in order to provide coverage or lower premiums.

A technical solution cannot mitigate the impact of an attack. It is possible to cause significant harm to parties involved even in small-scale attacks, such as committing serious crimes through other people's Internet connections, including DDoS attacks and phone call flooding. Technology cannot solve the problem on its own.

IoT attacks: what are they?

Typically, attackers use additional software to control Internet-connected devices after they have gained control of them, and then use the device for further attacks and their own purposes.

A hacker usually uses hacked devices to attack other devices, and these devices typically take commands from command-and-control centers that are usually just other computers on the internet.

In many heavy Internet-connected devices, the manufacturer wants to collect data about the device's operation to conduct preventative maintenance, license, and provide service. In addition to costing millions of dollars, these devices can cause substantial damage if taken over by a malicious party. Field service organizations often log in to the device. Examples include paper mills, mining machinery, and harbor cranes.

For high-end devices, security is driven by the cost of process failures, the damage the devices can cause locally, the environmental impact of malfunctions, and the immediate risk to human life.
