Why do we pray? Each person has a different perspective and approach towards prayer. There can be a specific reason behind prayer such as a need that you’d wish to be granted, or prayers that are directed towards the benefits of others like praying for someone’s well being. While there are some who pray simply to express their gratitude to the almighty for all he has given them. Each approach has effects associated with it that are a result of the trust that you place in the deity you’re praying to. Placing your trust in someone is equivalent to meditation; you let your complete self into the embrace of the one or nothingness.

Goal-directed prayer
It is a worldwide phenomenon, existing in majority of the practices with regards to praying, where people have a specific goal associated with prayers. The need behind a prayer is of least importance when it comes studying the effects of it. The part which holds more importance is the dedication put into praying. Several practitioners have put a serious thought to know the effects of goal-directed prayer and they have merged scientific data with their religious practices. Published on various platforms, their findings are now in the public domain open to reactions by those who are willing to take up the subject in their practices.

Prayers as means of expressing gratitude
To be thankful for all you have been given by the provider is another form of praying and it basically means expressing gratitude for the lord’s compassion towards you. This involves getting closer to the lord for a selfless reason. It has more purity to it and the relation between God and you is more pious. What makes it pure is the non-existence of a motive behind the prayer where, if it did exist, you’d be asking for more than you already have. It can be connected to the fact that ‘expectations always bring you sorrow’ and thus, when the expectations are absent you feel content and happier.

Practitioners who devote their time and resources in finding different uses of prayers in humans’ lives have one common thing to offer and that is the fact that praying is placing your complete trust in someone that you do not even completely know. This kind of trust drives optimism in you and the benefits that one reaps are a result of this strong positive belief. Many of these practitioners have also published books about consciousness and prayer, and the connection between these which is an interesting angle to look at praying.
