A Quick Guide for Hiring a Personal Trainer

Posted by deven utekar on October 21st, 2016

Hiring a personal trainer can be confusing and can also be a sizable investment. So, when looking to hire a personal trainer you'll want to take the extra effort to make sure you ultimately hire one that is best suited for you and your specific goals.

Personal trainers come with a wide variety of skill sets, specialties, and experience. Just because someone is certified as a personal trainer doesn't necessarily mean that they're worth investing in.

As with any other profession, for every quality personal trainer in the industry there are a handful of others that simply don't have what it takes to influence, instruct and motivate others.

I want to help simplify the process of hiring a personal trainer by giving you a quick guide with several tips that you can use to have complete confidence in knowing that you've hired the perfect personal trainer for you.

First, I want to point out something that often goes unnoticed...

Always remember that a personal trainer can only do so much for you.

If you aren't willing to meet them halfway, and apply everything they teach you exactly as they teach it, you might as well save your money.

No matter how good a personal trainer is, they won't be able to do for you what you aren't willing to do for yourself.

What Do They Charge

If you do your due diligence in meeting with several different people you'll see that the rate they charge can vary to a large degree.

Well known, reputable trainers can charge over 0 per hour for their services, while those with less experience may only charge per hour. For the most part you will get what you pay for, but this isn't always the case.

By using the tips shared throughout the rest of this article you may very well find a high quality trainer that won't charge you an unrealistic fee. The trick is asking the right questions and knowing what to look for.

Regardless of what you decide to pay, make sure that you pick a trainer that you can afford for several months before committing to them. Having to stop working with them 2 weeks in because you overcommitted financially will be a waste for you and frustrating to your trainer.

Do They Include Nutrition Advice

Because it will be integral to their success and yours, most personal trainers offer some sort of nutrition advice with their services.

Although, there are trainers out there who strictly provide training regimens, so you'll want to be sure that you ask if nutrition plans or dietary guidelines are included with their services before hiring a personal trainer.

The time you spend training at the gym each week will only account for a certain percentage of your ability to transform your body and achieve your goals. The truth is that the way you're feeding your body the other 95% of your time spent away from the gym is what will have the greatest impact on your results.

Unless you're on an extremely limited budget, or already have a thorough understanding regarding how to feed the body to induce the results you're looking for, you'll want to make sure you find a trainer with a background in nutrition that includes a diet plan or nutritional guidelines with their training services.

Ask for Before and After Photos

Would you ask a poor person for financial advice? Of course not!

You shouldn't ask a fat and out of shape person for fitness guidance either.

Not only shouldn't you ask an unfit person for fitness advice, but if a personal trainer can't produce testimonials with before and after photos of those they've worked with, this should also give you reason to doubt their abilities.

One of the most assuring ways to know if a personal trainer can show you how to achieve your goals is to see before and after photos of their clients who've gotten the same results you're after.

If the trainer has done it with someone else, you can rest assured that they'll be able to do the same with you.

Do They Seem Passionate

The passion with which a personal trainer talks about their services will tell you a great deal about their abilities as a personal trainer. The ability to motivate and encourage is one that's possessed by every successful personal trainer.

If you're interviewing a potential Personal Trainer and they seem skittish, not too enthusiastic, and their confidence is less than stellar, you can expect the same level of energy when they're training you and should probably look elsewhere - unless you've seen them at work and know that they're different while training clients.

If you're going to be dropping thirty or more dollars an hour on a personal trainer, motivation and a high level of energy should be included!

Take Your Time and Do It Right

Hiring a fitness expert can be a time consuming process, but you'll want to take your time and do it right.

Interview at least two or three trainers before making your decision, make sure what they charge for their services is something you can commit to for at least a couple of months, make them produce photos proving they can induce the results you're after, and if you can afford it, hire a trainer that provides some sort of nutritional services as well.
