The service industry is a fast paced industry which incorporates a vast umbrella of service providers. These could be hospitality businesses like hotels and restaurants, maintenance firms like plumbing outlets and personal service groups such as dog groomers. Hospitality industry is a broader version with many small industries contributing their part. The service industry is defined as individuals or organizations, who work to provide a service to the general public. Out of all the industries, food service industry is highly talked about due to the enormous scale of its operation. Food service industry is made up of individuals or organizations, also known as food service providers, who take up food contracts for institutions, government organizations, corporates, schools, non government organizations and the likes.

The food service industry provides employment to thousands of people ranging from chefs, hoteliers, wait staffs, housekeeping professionals and many more. What is it about this industry that attracts people to work in it? Let’s take a look at some of the advantages of working in the service industry:

Flexible working hours- Unlike corporates and multinational companies, service industry provides flexible working hours in forms of shifts. The person working can opt for the shift that suits him the best. For example: A part time student working at a local coffee shop would want to prefer evening shift with his morning college. So it’s easier to manage work and personal life.

Steady Work- Automation has swept away thousands of jobs and rendered people jobless. But service industry is one such industry where human presence can never become redundant. Service industry jobs will always be in demand as people continue to look to these businesses to meet their various needs. The health-care industry, in particular, is expected to remain vital over the next few years as the general population continues to age.

Skill Enhancement- Working in a service industry can help an individual develop and master specific interpersonal skills every day, such as effective communication and managing conflict resolution. The hospitality industry, in particular presents daily challenges in terms of customer relations, customer service and employees are expected to go out of their way or think out of the box to handle queries.

Entrepreneurship- Working in the service industry makes people more aware about their skills and teaches them techniques to enhance them. Once an individual gains experience, it opens the doors to entrepreneurship. People become self sufficient and more confident with being their own boss.
