Vaikundarajan On PIL Transfer To Chennai

The contents of a report submitted by a special team led by IAS officer Gagan Deep Singh Bedi concerning the illegal beach sand mining in southern districts were under scrutiny. An advocate petitioned to make the content public stating that the public had the right to know the details of the report.

Following this petition, The Madras High Court Bench has transferred the public interest petition to Principal Seat of High Court in Chennai. The petitioner in question has been seeking a direction to initiate appropriate action against the illegal mining of garnet, ilmenite and rutile from beach sand.

When several allegations were made against top mining companies, the State Government set up a special investigation team to look into the matter. One of the accused was VV Minerals India, leading sand beach mining companies in India, founded by S Vaikundarajan in the late 1980s. The investigating team conducted a detailed probe in the southern district before submitting the report. The government kept the report confidential and decided to extend the enquiry to other areas.

“The investigation was completed and report submitted in November 2013. However, no evidence of illegal activity was found against VV Minerals,” says Vaikundarajan.
