Massage therapy has a rich cultural and historical background across the world, offering physical and mental healing through touch. Two prominent types of massage—Korean Gunma massage and Western-style massage—offer distinct approaches to wellness. While both aim to relieve stress, ease muscle tension, and improve circulation, they differ significantly in technique, philosophy, and cultural roots. Understanding these differences helps individuals make informed decisions about which type of therapy best suits their needs.

Gunma (건마) is a uniquely Korean style of massage that blends modern techniques with traditional Korean therapeutic principles. “Gunma” literally means “dry massage,” indicating that oils, creams, or lotions are generally not used during the session. This form of massage often takes place with the client fully clothed, using hand techniques such as pressing, stretching, kneading, and tapping to stimulate specific pressure points. The focus is on holistic balance—improving energy flow (similar to concepts found in Eastern medicine like Qi in Chinese medicine)—rather than merely targeting muscle knots or physical discomfort.

In contrast, Western-style massages, such as Swedish or deep tissue massage, are rooted in anatomy and physiology. These massages usually involve oil or lotion and are performed with the client partially or fully unclothed, covered with a sheet. Swedish massage uses long, gliding strokes, kneading, and friction 건마 manipulate the muscles and soft tissues, promoting relaxation and blood flow. Deep tissue massage goes further, applying sustained pressure to deeper muscle layers to address chronic pain and muscle tightness. Western methods tend to focus on muscular structure and physical tension rather than energy flow.

One of the most noticeable differences between Gunma and Western massage lies in the philosophy. Gunma follows more holistic health principles inspired by Eastern medicine, aiming to balance the body’s energy and encourage natural healing processes. It often involves techniques that connect different parts of the body, such as pulling and stretching limbs to stimulate the spine or internal organs. Western massage therapy, however, is typically grounded in medical science, with goals like reducing muscle pain, rehabilitating injuries, or improving athletic performance.

Technique and pressure application also vary greatly. Gunma uses rhythmic tapping, palm pressing, and acupressure—sometimes even involving tools like wooden sticks or ceramic implements to target specific meridian points. These techniques are meant to stimulate the nervous system and internal organs, not just soothe sore muscles. On the other hand, Western massages use more fluid and consistent strokes, often focusing on muscle fibers and connective tissues. The pressure in Western massage is usually applied gradually, whereas Gunma may use sudden, deliberate force in certain spots for therapeutic effect.

Another major distinction is the setting and atmosphere. Gunma massage in Korea often takes place in private rooms, with a calm, minimalistic design, soft lighting, and traditional Korean music. Some services are offered in spas or wellness centers, while others are available for home visits—a popular option for busy individuals seeking comfort and convenience. Western-style massages are generally done in spas, wellness centers, or clinics, often featuring a spa-like ambiance with aromatherapy and soothing music, focusing on indulgence as well as therapy.
