Understanding the Difference between Novelty ID and Fake ID

As you look for the best fake IDs online, you might come across the term ‘Novelty ID,’ which you might think is a fancy way of referring to a fake, ID. This is, however, not true as there are distinct differences between a novelty ID and a fake ID. Today, we will be looking at how a fake ID differs from a novelty ID.

 What Is a Novelty ID?

 A novelty ID is a custom designed Identification card that is intended not to infringe any laws or copyright. This means that novelty IDs will, whatsoever, not resemble any government Identification, be it a driving license or a school ID. To put this into perspective, a driving license usually features the following order; ‘A state name + the words ‘Driving License.’ Therefore, the print would be ‘California Driving License.’ If and when a novelty ID designer prints a driving license with the following word layout, it will be considered as a copyright infringement.

 Another way in which a novelty card designer can infringe law and/or copyright is if they use the same format when printing the license number as used in a government issued driving license. Printing your name, date of birth, signature and any other details would however not be considered copyright infringement.

 In any case, when you attempt to replicate a genuine Identification card, you are required by law to include a print with red ink in front of the document which acts as a disclaimer, with the text “Not a Government Issued Document.”

 What Is a Fake ID?

 A fake ID is a document that is printed exactly like the original ID. This is usually a replica of a government issued Identification card. A fake ID, well, is fake and therefore will never contain true information about the card holder. A fake ID will usually have a wrong name and/or date of birth. There are tons of websites that print fake IDs, some which are genuine, others which only steal your credit card information and/or money. An expertly-made fake ID will have all the features that a legit ID has a functioning barcode strip, ultra violet (UV) ink, microprint, and holograms.

 A fake ID could also be a legit ID that has been altered. This, however, is rare these days as Identification cards are printed from PVC, Teslin or plastic. This is different from a few years back when Identification cards issues by the government were laminations, which were easy to fake.

 Overall, novelty IDs are not considered to infringe any copyright laws if the designer is careful not to replicate a legal government document. A fake ID, on the other hand, is illegal as it completely photocopies a legal government document.
