But first let us have a look at the basic structure of the higher education. Curriculum and structure The content and quality is designed by the Accreditation Commission and then approved by the Ministry of education, youth and sport which is the governing body. The Czech Republic provides both university and non-university type of education. The first type of accredited degree course is offered at three levels. Bachelor’s Degree Takes 3-4 years Successful candidates may continue with the Master’s degree or get into a job Master’s Degree May be taken up as a follow-up programme (1-3 years) or as a full time programme (4-6 years) It concentrates on attaining and application of knowledge together with the cultivation of the innovative faculty. Doctoral Programme Taken up by graduates from Master’s programmes and lasts about3 years. It stresses on the inquisitive and creative development of the mind The above programmes end with a state-level exam and include the presentation of a thesis. Publication of the doctoral thesis is mandatory. Organisation of the studies The academic year is divided into two semesters or terms: TEACHING PERIOD- mid-September-mid-February (winter semester) Mid-February - mid-May (spring semester) EXAMINATION PERIOD- Jan-mid May (winter semester) mid-May – end of June (spring semester) Mode of assessment The frequency of assessing student’s achievements varies from subject to subject. In some cases, a partial exam has been introduced after each semester. In other cases again, a comprehensive exam is taken mostly after the end of a module. The performances are assessed by a system of credits or points. Since the European Credit system is very much accepted and everywhere it makes the transferability of the students within the system very easy. The non-university bachelor’s programme provides a higher education diploma or a supplement to it on completion. Being done with the higher education we will now move to the various language courses offered by the public and the private institutions. Characteristics : These courses are designed for foreign students, teachers, translators, interpreters and other experts active in the field of Czech/Slavonic studies. They are offered at various levels of proficiency, seminars on the Czech literature, culture and history, free-time activity including theatrical, musical and dance performances, trips and tours. They are held during the summer months (July-September) and continue for 2-4 weeks as per the course content. Application for scholarship should reach the Czech ministry of Education, youth and sport by 31st March. Scholarships are granted only to those students who are nominated by the respective foreign government agencies or by the Czech diplomatic missions The students who are offered scholarships by the ministry of education, youth and sport are entitled to free boarding and lodging, coverage of course and free access to cultural events which are part of the course programmes. The language programmes offered by the Institute for language and preparatory studies under the Charles University at a glance: Preparatory course-It is for the high school leavers. It increases their chance of clearing the Czech entrance exam and prepares them for studies in the Bachelor’s, Master’s and Doctoral studies. Intensive Czech language courses-It is for those who need to learn the language quickly and well for work or everyday situation. Generally take six week to a year. Classes are held once or twice a week. Those who are unable to take the classes at the set time are offered the courses over the Skype.
