Uses of Low Temperature Solder

Posted by Alphaassembly on November 28th, 2016

A low-temperature solder may be necessary in a surface mount assembly of products which cannot go through harsh temperatures and conditions. Low temperature soldering may be beneficial in certain applications because it may help reduce or eliminate the need to use lead. Likewise, it is preferred for its step soldering capability and thermal shock reduction. Low-temperature SMT soldering can be accomplished using the right alloy and process to help reduce the total cost of ownership while ensuring the delivery of reliable solder joints.

Low temperature soldering is used in many applications requiring low-temperature metals and alloys. . Soldering in low temperatures is commonly administered when interconnecting electronic components. In this process, using high reflow temperatures may cause a product to fail. Low temperature soldering is used in temperature-sensitive components like MEMs devices, III/V semiconductors, and crystal oscillators. It is ideal for low-Tg or low-melting flex circuitry, too, which is typically used in smartwatches, smartphones, and various internet-of-things gadgets and devices. BGAs and other large area array devices may benefit with low temperature soldering to avoid non-wet-open failures and head-in-pillow defects. Some applications may require low temperature soldering for a step-soldering process, especially when a lower temperature, secondary reflow process is needed after a SAC soldering or standard eutectic process.

Low temperature soldering can make it easier to achieve high-quality solder joints while reducing labor, materials, and energy requirements. The low-temperature solder material is useful in a through-hole step process as it replaces the need to go through two surface mount technology steps while serving as a step for wave soldering. That way, you get more value with lower total cost of ownership. One of the solder materials used in low temperature soldering is lead-free alloy, which is ideal because of its low melting point. Some of the best lead-free alloys demonstrates temperature resistance where thermal cycling must be accelerated.
