It was only in the 1960s that the term RV or Recreational Vehicle was first used. Prior to that, the terms that were used to define motorhomes alternated between campers and travel trailers.

The earliest use of RVs can be dated back to the 17th century. Back then they were known as caravans instead of vehicles that were used for recreational trips. These mostly served as temporary accommodation for those searching for patrons or employers or both.

By the 1800s, wagons were being used as homes rather than just a mode of transport. And by the 1850s, these became associated with nomadic gypsies.

The RV industry flourished the most after the second world war was over and people felt a pull towards open roads and the prospect of discoveries.

Today, the average age for RV owners is 48 years old, but it is great to see more and more youngsters showing an inclination towards owning their own RV.

On an average, an RV is put to use for 28 to 35 days in a year by those who own one. That is because they spend less time moving around and more in settling their RVs in a specific spot, which they like to explore by foot.

There are different terms used for RVs. The Chinese call it a Fang Che, while the Dutch still stick to the old term “Caravan”. In France, it is known as a camping car, in Germany it is called a Wohnwagen and the Swedish call it a house car.
