Why Tennis Strings Are So Important to Improving Your Game

Tennis strings may seem basic and straightforward, but their thickness or gauge can actually affect the racket’s performance—and ultimately, your game. Try playing with two identical rackets with different strings. You will quickly notice how different they feel and play in the court.

The recommended frequency of tennis racket stringing will depend on the number of times you play every week. Stringing once per year is often adequate if you only play once a week. Have your racket restrung twice a year if you play twice a week. If you play more often than that, then you need to restring your racket more frequently. You don’t have to wait for the strings to be worn out before buying new ones.

Choosing the right strings is crucial if you are serious about improving your game. Polyester is ideal for players who typically hit with too much spin (and therefore break strings frequently). The slick coating enables the strings to quickly snap back to their position. Polyester strings can be made with various angles, not just round. This way, movement is enhanced for more spin and less ‘friction burn,’ which happens when the crosses and the main rub together, causing the strings to break. The downside to polyester strings is that their tensions tend to loosen rather quickly, between just 10 and 15 hours of playing.

Natural gut tennis strings are made of natural fibers that offer longer dwell time, ease on the arm, and the ability to hold tension. However, they tend to be pricey. The elements may also affect their performance and quality. Still, they may be the best choice if you suffer from tennis elbow or you if you don’t often break strings. Otherwise, you can consider multifilament strings that feel similar to natural gut, except that they are made of nylon fibers. This alternative can maintain tension much longer. And since they are softer, they enable more power.

Synthetic gut tennis strings can provide durability and feel, and they are preferred by players who want longer-lasting and cost-effective strings. Hybrid strings combine different types of strings. For example, you may use polyester in the crosses or the mains, and natural gut or synthetic for the rest.
