A WORD OF ADVICE FOR THE PARENTS OF AN ENGINEERING ASPIRANT

In India, there has been a rigid and deep-rooted notion in the minds of the parents of all the students that conventional branches of study are the best and safest options to fetch a job. Therefore, every household has if not a doctor but an engineering graduate. But, is it necessary to become an engineer? This question holds a lot of significance in today’s times when there are so many other fields where students can shine equally and earn good money. Following are some golden rules that parents might want to consider while their ward is deciding about the course she/he wants to study for the next few years:

• Always see what your child is best at and then let her/him decide the field they want to take up during under-graduation. Do not compare your child with others of his age. Your child might be having certain strengths that others lack and vice versa.

• Another myth is about high employment rate of a particular course. Parents should keep this in mind that no course offers or denies job opportunities. It is up to the student, how skilled she/he can become to suit the job market. Therefore, do not push your ward towards a course because you find a large number of employed people who pursued that course.

• Even if your child considers Engineering for further studies, then do not force them to take up a particular branch. Parents have this myth that only a few engineering branches have high employability rate viz. IT or Computer Sciences, etc. This is absolutely wrong. Every branch has equal employment opportunities.
