Information Regarding Features of a Water Pump Mounting Gasket

The cooling system of a vehicle is a critical part of any vehicle. Besides dissipating the heat generated by the engine, it also ensures the safety of various other components. The consequences of a failed cooling system of any vehicle system can be severe. A failed cooling system can not only permanently damage the vital engine components but also cause a threat to the life of the people inside the vehicle. The car engine generates immense heat and if it is not controlled properly, the engine might catch fire. The cooling system ensures that the engine’s temperature stays moderate as long as it is on.

The cooling system of a car consists of a water pump that is responsible for cooling down the engine. Another simple but highly important component of the cooling system is the water pump mounting gasket. The sound functioning of a water pump is largely affected by the condition of the mounting gasket. The position and function of the mounting gasket make it so important.

The water pump mounting gasket separates the engine and the water pump by filling up the empty space between them. Without it, the engine coolant will start to leak and the engine will overheat. It also inhibits the contaminants such as dirt and oil to enter the water pump. A damaged water pump mounting gasket can cause water leakage in the oil compartment.

Water pump mounting gaskets come in various shapes, materials, and sizes but they are vehicle and pump specific. The water pump mounting gasket can be damaged because of corrosion or wearing out. If not replaced within a certain time frame, a damaged water pump mounting gasket can cause damage to the engine in addition to the entire cooling system breaking down.

Mounting gaskets are often used with sealants. The sealants are used to increase the life of the mounting gasket. Preinstalled mounting gaskets do not use sealants but many auto repair shops advise to use sealants with the water pump mounting gaskets. The choice of the right sealant depends on the type of the mounting gasket and its material. Choosing the wrong sealant that is not familiar with the material of the mounting gasket can severely damage the gasket.

Mounting gaskets are made out of paper, felt, and metal. Each one is designed according to the needs of the vehicle and the water pump. You can use copper, silicone, anaerobic, and fast drying or hardening sealants. You should consult your an auto shop before using any type of sealant on the mounting gasket. It significantly increases the lifespan of the gasket.

However, some experts also suggest installing gaskets without a sealant whereas others swear by it. It is just the difference of opinion based on their personal experience and preference. You can go online for guidance or use your better judgment to go for a sealant.
