There are many diseases that are likely to develop during early years of life, but due to being highly misunderstood cannot be treated well in time. Scoliosis is also one such medical condition that can prove to be troublesome, if not diagnosed and treated on time. There are many notions related to the problem that need to be cleared to understand it in better way. Scoliosis is not necessarily a disease, it is a situation of abnormal curvature of the spine making it look curved or bent from sideways. The curve can be of different shape in different cases. It can be bent from left or right making it look like a C from the front, or it can bent slightly from both the sides forming a shape like S.

Scoliosis can develop in early age from infants to 15 years old. In most of the cases, scoliosis is found in children aging from 10-15 years. There may not always be clear causes of this problem as it can be a result of anything from  congenital to neuromuscular defect. It can also be a result of embryological malformation of one or more vertebrae. The general signs of scoliosis are uneven shoulders, uncentered head raised above the pelvis, one or both hips raised, bent waist, bending on either sides and so on. For some people, it may not cause any pain or uneasiness while in other cases, the patient can feel discomfort in various nerves and muscles. Scoliosis is diagnosed through physical tests, x-ray exam, spinal radiograph or CT scan. In these tests, the exact angle of the curve is identified for suitable treatment. Various methods from slowly correcting scoliosis to bracing or surgery are used to treat this problem.

Bracing is an initial method and implemented when the skeleton is not completely matured. It is primarily used to prevent the curve from increasing and the brace is worn until the growth of the curve is stable. However, if the curve is severe, surgery is the only option left. Surgery also becomes an urgent need if the patient has nerve damage or is experiencing intense pain. In serious situations, the patient has to discuss with doctor what method is better in scoliosis surgery, rod stainless vs titanium. The precautions and response rate differ in both the cases.
