Multivitamins ? A Necessary Supplement for Kids

Posted by HealthyPlanet on December 8th, 2016

Children can become malnourished without proper nutrition. You have to ensure that they are eating a balanced diet. However, it can be challenging to ensure that kids are eating right. Many kids are picky eaters, causing them to miss out on the good stuff and resulting in nutritional deficiencies. If you are worried that your children are not getting proper nutrition, you may need to give them multivitamins to ensure that they have all the vitamins and minerals that they need. But before you give your kids multivitamins, it is essential to consult their pediatrician about it.

Before Anything Else

Just because your kids are picky eaters doesn’t mean that they are malnourished. They might already be getting vitamins and minerals like vitamins D and B, iron, and calcium from food like breakfast cereal, orange juice, and milk. This is why you need to talk to their doctor first. A doctor may recommend multivitamins if a child is showing signs of delay in developmental and physical growth. Likewise, the doctor may recommend multivitamins if your child has a restrictive diet (i.e. vegan), food allergies, or a chronic disease. Kids who love carbonated sodas and eat a lot of fast food, processed food, and convenience store food are likely to be prescribed a multivitamin by their doctor, too.

Choosing Multivitamins for Kids

If multivitamins are necessary, be sure to pick a product that is ideal for your child’s age. The recommended age group is typically indicated on the label or bottle of multivitamins for kids, so you should be able to choose wisely. Moreover, make sure that the product will not provide over 100 percent of the daily value of minerals and vitamins. Multivitamin manufacturers typically label their products appropriately to indicate whether they are for kids or adults.

Certain vitamins and minerals are crucial for growing children, so make sure that you buy multivitamins that have all the critical ones for your kids:

Vitamin B – Look for vitamins B2, B3, B12, and B6 for energy, good metabolism, and healthy nervous and circulatory systems.
Vitamin A – For healthy eyes and skin, and for proper bone and tissue repair, normal growth and development, and a better immune system.
Vitamin D – For good teeth and bone formation and to enhance the body’s calcium absorption.
Iron – For healthy blood and muscle build up.
Calcium – For strong bones and teeth.
