Get Prepared for an Earthquake Before It's too late

Posted by Safety owls on December 19th, 2016

While California is the most earthquake prone state, there are other regions in the U.S. that are the fault zones. According to a report, as of now, California has witnessed 7149 earthquakes and the U.S. geologists and seismologists have predicted that you'll face at least one earthquake of 6.7M in your entire life. Unfortunately, many Californians are living on the edge, and some of them don't even have an idea about it.

When an earthquake strikes, you may not even get enough time to respond. Before you understand that the ground is shaking, and it's an earthquake, things start getting worse. You may hear people's roaring or rumbling sounds that gradually grow louder. Within a second or two, the rolling sensation may also grow violent. The worst part is that you sense danger, but you find it too difficult to move or even stand up.

The best way to survive and minimize your risk of injury is to be prepared. Just plan, prepare, and practice what you and your family members will do during such event.

Earthquake Practice Drills

By practicing how to respond during the event of an earthquake actually reduces the risk of injury to a great extent. During such event, most of the mishaps are caused by collapsing building materials and falling of heavy objects. Knowing about the safe places in each room of your home is helpful. Don't make any mistake by overlooking the significance of practicing drills.

During an earthquake:

  • Take a shed under a table or desk.
  • If no table or desk is around you, then cover your head with your arms and stand in a strong doorway.
  • Stay away from falling objects and windows that could shatter.
  • Try to escape the building and do not use elevators.

Earthquake Preparedness Kit

Luckily, several types of survival kits are available in the market that are helpful to keep you safe and comfortable during an earthquake. Such kits have all the essential items that can help you get back on your feet. Of course, we can't predict the next shake, however, keeping an earthquake preparedness kit handy gives you a sigh of relief and sense of safety.

Some essential items:

  • First aid supplies
  • Safety vest, mask & gloves
  • Flashlight & batteries
  • Whistle
  • Knife or scissors
  • Radio
  • Food & water

So, why risk your and your loved ones' lives? Get prepared before it's too late.
