Family photographs have held a deeper meaning in history than we even think about today. In fact, there have been ongoing research to understand those meanings hidden behind family photographs as for historians, these are nothing short of cultural artifacts. That is because, in many cases, photographs are the only biographical material left behind by generations! It becomes important to preserve them and value them a great deal more than regular trifling objects.

That brings us to modern day formal and informal shots of family, friends and guests. Though it is hard to compare the current posing styles and photography technology to those that existed generations ago, the very idea of capturing precious people in precious moments, as if to freeze time, hasn’t been too tampered with. It is a good thing that the desire to preserve memories is still intact even though the ways of doing so have undergone drastic changes. If you prefer candid shots over well-arranged formal ones, you should keep the following in mind.

  1. Don’t let anyone know that you are planning a shoot:
It would be wise in many occasions to not let anyone be aware that you have planned to get informal shots of family and guests at an event or celebration. You would need a skilled photographer who can be smart with handling the situations, staying hidden and capturing the most interesting moments in the most natural way.

  2. Ask everyone to be natural:
In case you would like them to be aware of what you have in mind, tell them to be relaxed and engage in their regular activities and conversations while the shots are being taken.

  3. Be creative with posing:
When you ask your family, friends or guests to pose, be creative with the whole setting. You would need help of your photographer to assist you all with getting the idea of a particular situation or position that could be captured as informal, natural, happy and interesting, all at the same time.

  4. Think of a theme:
You could also think about following a certain theme to create an album for the event. That way, all those pictures would be following a systematic order if that is what you prefer even when you are organizing your memories.

  5. Get a good photographer:
Most important, make sure that you hire a good photographer with an artistic style and aesthetic sense. For that, having a good look at their portfolio would suffice because you would get a direct glimpse into their style of working.
