Learn How to Scrap Your Car for Cash

Sooner or later, every car owner comes to a point when the service and repair costs of their vehicle exceed its actual worth. At that point, the vehicle is just eating up the parking space while deteriorating further. The best option is to scrap the vehicle for cash. In order to extract the maximum possible amount from scrapping your old car while fulfilling all the associated legal requirements with the process, you must know the right way to do it.

Before scrapping your car, it is best if you inform the DVLA in advance. By doing that, you would not be liable for any road tax after it is scrapped. You have to fill the section in the V5C document and exchange it for the Certificate of Destruction that has to be sent to DVLA. As soon as you complete the paperwork, you will not be liable for any of the road tax in the future for the vehicle. If you have paid some in advance, the DVLA will process a refund.

The first and foremost thing to do is to extract all the working parts from your vehicle to sell them off individually. Such parts and components you are often of high value to many people and give you more returns than you expect. Such working parts can be sold as replacements or spares to other owners with compatible vehicles. Selling the components individually may even bring in more money than scrapping the entire vehicle.

Search online for a scrapping dealer whooffers the best price in your area. Before taking it to the scrap yard, you should clean the car after removing any components and parts that can be sold separately. Cleaning does not mean that you have to wash the entire vehicle, just take out the garbage that inevitably accumulates and any unused components so that you do not have to pay any extra labour charges.

Check the CoD (Certificate of Destruction) of the company. Only the dealers who have a valid CoD are qualified to scrap vehicles. Do not be distracted by invalid licences that have similar names like ‘Destruction Certificate’ since they do not qualify a business for scrapping vehicles. Such dealers are usually scammers looking to swindle people at best and may be involved in criminal activity at worst.

Once you have completed all the paperwork and legal formalities, it is important that you negotiate for the offered price with the dealer. First offers from the dealer are going to be lower than what they are willing to pay. You have to put in some effort to get the best possible deal.
