Polyimide film's dimensional stability is many times greater than conventional film. In addition, the properties of excellent resistance to varying temperatures of heat along with resistance to chemicals make this product suitable for many industrial applications. Other properties of polyimide are the low linear expansion and low hygroscopic expansion.
New trends in polyimide use
Polyimide tape with adhesive is finding use in several industrial and electronic industry applications. Particularly when used as an isolation and separation medium in flexible printed circuit boards.A new application of polyimide has recently been introduced in AISTech 2016 (The Iron and Steel Technology trends conference) held in Pittsburgh, USA. Polyimide based thermal transfer printed barcode tags with excellent abrasion resistance at high temperatures were exhibited. These new labels also included permanent acrylic and silicone pressure sensitive adhesives.
In another breakthrough technology involving polyimide flexible LEDs (light emitting diodes) on a polyimide substrate was unveiled and a research paper published in The Optical Society. The flexible LED gets its property from polyimide and polydimethylsiloxane substrate. The research involved covering the polyimide substrate with copper foil shielding tape and then mounting LEDs. This augurs well for wearable technology and non-flat surfaces.
