Various Applications of Liquid De-Icer

De-icers are products that are applied to roads and industrial equipment to prevent ice from forming or reducing the effects of cold weather on roads and equipment. De-icers were traditionally made of solid material that was scattered or spread on areas that must resist freezing, but liquid versions have proven to be more beneficial for various reasons. A liquid de-icer is more likely to stay on the intended spot and will not scatter or bounce off the surface to affect other areas. Therefore, it minimizes contamination of surrounding soil and ground water, and is more effective in preventing ice from forming on machinery, roads and mining equipment.

Mining is one application where liquid de-icer is effective, particularly for conveyor belts. One specially formulated liquid de-icer for mining is a non-toxic belt wetting compound that is completely compatible with ethylene, propylene glycol, and other wetting fluids that are glycol-based. Reputable manufacturers of this type of liquid de-icer have freeze-tested it to ensure stability and the ability of the product to retain a low viscosity, even when exposed to freezing temperatures of up to -40 degrees Celsius. Potassium acetate is another type of liquid de-icer for mining, used to prevent aggregates like coal and petroleum coke from freezing to conveyor systems, rail cars, and truck boxes.

Snow, ice and freezing rain in extremely cold winter weather could cause roads to become slippery and dangerous for driving and walking. A high-quality liquid de-icer will work to melt ice and snow quickly, and it will leave no residue, unlike solid de-icers, which leave powdery or greasy residue that is hard to clean. If the liquid de-icer leaves a residue, its anti-icing properties are still active and will continue to work for an extended period to minimize the need for reapplication. This makes liquid de-icers more cost-effective, as well.

A liquid de-icer is typically deemed eco-friendly because it is non-corrosive and made with non-toxic ingredients. Without hazardous elements, liquid de-icers can be applied generously without causing negative effects on nearby grass and other vegetation. A single application can cover a wider area compared with rock salt and other conventional de-icing agents, making it possible to save time and effort, too.
