How to Find a Great Interior Design Firm

Posted by 3Qi Design on January 4th, 2017

When it comes to choosing an interior design team that fits your needs it’s important to do your due diligence to make sure that you find a good fit.  These are our top 5 tips for finding a great interior design team: Search locally, view portfolios, check certifications, schedule initial meeting, and compare quotes.

Search Locally

When looking for a good interior design firm we recommend searching and hiring locally. Hiring a local company supports your local economy and cuts down on travel time which will definitely be billed for. Search online for what you services you require followed by your local city. If you were located in Calgary and you required residential interior design you would search for “Residential Interior Design Calgary”. Spend time reviewing websites and putting together your shortlist.Do the companies offer the services you are looking for?

View Interior Design Portfolios

Spend some time reviewing designportfolios of the companies on your shortlist. Are the designs unique? How would you rate the firm’s attention to detail?  Good designs are layered with detail. Does the design firm have a specialty? Residential Design? Commercial Design? Finding a company with a well-rounded portfolio ensures that you get a unique design within your budget and timeline that you love.Choose a company like3Qi Design (check them out online at http://www.3qidesign.com/) –with their extensive portfolio and relevant experience you would be incredibly happy with your finished design. If you have more questions after viewing the design portfolios considerask for references from previous clients. Speaking with previous clients is a great way for new clients to gain confidence in the designer and move forward with ease and peace of mind

Review Credentials

There are different levels of training for interior designers and not all designers have been formally trained. We’ve seen some shotty designers with extensive training and incredible designers with little to no formal training. What’s really important is the amount of experience your designer has, the team they surround themselves with, and whether or not they carry insurance. In the design industry interior designers can write the NCIDQ qualifying exam once they’ve completed at least a 3 year advanced diploma then 5000 plus hours of work experience under a qualified interior designer. Interior designers without an NCIDQ number can still produce drawings and designs as long as they are stamped by an architect. If a designer does not state their level of education on their site – be sure to ask and do your due diligence.

Initial Meeting

Schedule a meeting with your potential designer and pay attention to the questions they are asking and whether or not they are listening to what you are saying.  It is your space that is being transformed so it’s important that your thoughts and ideas are being understood and interpreted correctly. A good designer will value your input, feedback, and suggestions. A good designer will take all ideas seriously and have experience working with all scenarios. Before you sign any sort of contract or agreement ensure that a proper line of communication has been established.

Compare Quotes

Once you’ve received all your quotes make sure you are comparing apples to apples. If there is a really low quote- where are they skimping on materials or labor? For the outrageously high quotes- why are they so high? We recommend scrapping the highest and lowest quotes right away, or if you really like to company-work with them to get a better quote. It’s important that your design firm be able to realistically work with your budget. You wouldn’t want someone to tell you that they can deliver a 0,000 product or service for ,000 because that just isn’t realistic. If something doesn’t look right- ask questions- ask as many as you need to before you sign any contracts.

We hope you’ve enjoyed our 5 tips for finding a compatible interior design firm. Remember that this is your project and you are the boss. Do your due diligence in the beginning and search locally, review portfolios, review credentials, schedule a meeting, and compare quotes.
