Water System Improvements in Westlake

Posted by Brian Talley on January 10th, 2017

Water District 10 in Westlake, Texas is beginning 2017 with water system improvements that coincide with the Bee Cave Road expansion. As part of the roadway and utility construction, a new main trunk transmission line will be added to the right-of-way that will be able to flow 3,000 to 6,000 gallons per minute, according to Water District 10 Board of Directors President Clif Drummond in a column in the Austin American-Statesman.

The goal of the water system project is to increase capacity, including for fire hydrant flow and for pumping. Water District 10 paid the Texas Department of Transportation .6 million for the line, which is expected to be completed by the end of the year. The funds were approved in the mid-2015 bond election.

Water District 10 serves about 3,000 retail customers, about 85 percent of which are residential customers. The general boundaries for the almost 5,000-acre district start just west of Rollingwood, Texas and span along Bee Cave Road to St. Stephens School Road. Westlake High School forms the approximate southern border, with High Road forming the northern edge. The topography includes several steep canyons, which provide gorgeous views for many Westlake homes.

The Bee Cave Road expansion project extends on a three-mile stretch along Bee Cave Road, from Bulian Lane to Red Bud Trail and involves adding a turn lane.

According to Drummond, the water district also has plans to lay smaller water lines in Westwood Terrace, along most of Red Bud Trail, along the western end of Yaupon Valley Road, and along Flintridge Road. Additionally, the water district acquired a two-acre property on Bee Cave Road that will house a third pump station for the system. The new station will include house pumps and electrical controls in a sound-insulated building, as well as a storage tank that will be 30 feet high and 40 feet wide.
