Questions to Ask a Surgeon when Considering Tummy Tuck Surgery

Posted by Mr. Sultan Hassan on January 16th, 2017

A tummy tuck is a surgical procedure that will remove the extra skin and fat from your lower abdomen and reposition your belly button. Also known as ‘abdominoplasty’, tummy tuck surgery will enable the reinforcement or tightening of weakened muscles on your tummy wall. The surgery may be ideal if you have lost a lot of weight, yet no amount of healthy eating and physical activity can fix and tone your tummy. Once you decide that it is for you, be sure to consult with an experienced and board-certified cosmetic surgeon who is known for his successful tummy tuck procedures. Here are some questions you should ask when talking to a cosmetic surgeon about tummy tuck surgery:

  • Am I a good candidate for this surgery? - Those who have extra skin and weak muscles on their abdomen are good candidates, but they need to be relatively healthy and in a good physical shape to make sure that their body can tolerate the surgery.
  • Are there any other options for me? - There are two types of tummy tuck procedures. Apart from the standard one, there is the mini-tummy tuck, which is similar to the original procedure, except that it removes the extra fat and skin only from the lower abdominal area. This option can be done when there is no loose or excess skin above your belly button.
  • What else will be done during tummy tuck surgery? - A surgeon may recommend doing liposuction at the same time as the tummy tuck procedure to contour your body. The procedure may include a reduction of your mons pubis, too, so it will not look prominent or appear to be protruding too much with your flatter tummy area.
  • What does a tummy tuck surgery involve? - It is always done under general anaesthesia and will take around two to 2.5 hours. You may need to stay at the hospital for two nights.
  • What are the risks associated with the procedure? - Bruising, temporary numbness, and swelling are common. The surgeon may prescribe painkillers to help you manage the pain, and antibiotics to fight infection. Some of the other risks are bad scarring, infection, delayed healing, bleeding, and asymmetry, but these are very rare.
