                             MBBS STUDY FOR SOUTH AFRICANS

With the demand for medical school admission in South Africa far outweighing the number of students who can be accepted, there is an increasing number of South African students heading overseas to study MBBS (Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery) mainly in China because of the limited number of spaces available at the eight medical schools in the country.www.hebeinu.org.cn/

Currently, there are 8 medical schools in South Africa as compared to approximately 180 medical schools in China. China has more schools and facilities than in South Africa and due to the limited space; it is just prudent to seek higher education elsewhere in accredited universities if you aren’t offered admission at your home universities.  China has the space to accommodate lot of international students and that is one of the reasons why China accepts South Africans and other international students.

Getting accepted into studying medicine at universities in South Africa is not easy. Many students have to settle for something that is not their first choice due to minimal available spots. That is not to say admission into universities for medicine in China come in handy; selection criteria are followed. Basic academic requirement is an average of 70% pass and no less than 60% in Mathematics, Physical Science, Chemistry and Biology. The criteria and quota systems used in South Africa are too strict coupled with limited space makes the admission process highly competitive. These are the many reasons you should think of joining other colleagues already pursuing their medical dreams here.

International studies for MBBS in China is relatively more costly compared to universities in South Africa. However, you can be assured of great services like high standards of education, serene learning environment, great infrastructure, improved total security, great culture etc.

It is very important for all South African applicants seeking to study MBBS in China to apply to universities accredited and recognized by World Health Organization (WHO).  This is important so they can be well equipped to pass the HPCSA board exam needed to practice at home. The written exam is a computerized examination which is made up of 100 single best of four multiple choice questions, 25 are medical law and ethics and the remainder is medical. The OSCE/OSPE (objective structured clinical examination/objective structured practical examination) consists of 13 manned stations of six minutes each. The pass mark is 50 percent on both parts.
