5 Post Flood Car Insurance TipsPosted by akanshasingh on February 13th, 2017 The images of the flash floods of Uttarakhand are still etched into the minds of people. The pictures of gushing walls of waters causing buildings to collapse are hard to forget. As the rain finally came to a stop and the stranded people were rescued, the nation heaved a sigh of relief. But the fact of the matter remains that people's lives were completely uprooted in the flood. Like everything else in life, it is important that they land on their feet and start again. The Government of India and various NGO's have started funds, in order to aid people who have lost their houses or their source of income during the flood. The heart-breaking scenes took me back to the flash floods in Mumbai and after effects it had on the lives of people. Even after the streets dried up, it took months before people could finally recover. When there is a natural disaster, the car insurance sector is in constant demand. People frantically try to file claims and get their coverage, as soon as possible. I can still recall the month long waiting list to get my car serviced after the floods in Mumbai. Employees of the car insurance company were working tirelessly in order to fix the vehicles quickly. However, the number of cars damaged was so high that the garages were booked for months on end. Form my past experience, here are a few tips you may find useful in case you have to apply for motor car insurance after a flood: 1. Do not try to start the car: Your first instinct is to see if the car is still working. However, it was submerged in water, which may have gotten into the engine. Starting the car in this condition, could lead to further damage to the engine. 2. Try and determine water level: You must look at water marks and debris to determine how much of the car was submerged. Car insurance companies consider the car totalled if the water is above a certain level. 3. Inform the company: The insurance company will probably be getting calls from all over the city, with thousands of cars being damaged. Hence, it is good to file your claim at the earliest. Once this is done, all you can do is wait for them to respond. 4. Dry the interior: If the car was logged with water, you can be sure that mould will start growing in a matter of days. This could further damage the vehicle. Hence, it is necessary to take some steps to dry in out. You can take out the floor mats and let them dry and you can also use a towel to mop up any excess water. 5. Check Wheels and Tires: You may need to have your vehicle towed to the nearest garage, in order to get it fixed. In this case you must check the tyres and under the car for any debris that could damage the vehicle further. Although a flood and the damages it unleashes is not something you can control, following these simple steps will help to keep the damages to your car to a minimum.
