Things to Consider When Visiting Your Beloved in a Memory Care Facility

Do you want to visit your loved one in a memory care facility as often as you can, but are unsure of how they’ll act towards you—or how you’d feel around them? Don’t worry—you are not alone. It’s normal to feel a little anxious when visiting a loved one in a memory care facility. Many people often feel sad, guilty, and a little bit relieved all at the same time. Here are some tips to help you get around those emotions and make your visits much more comfortable.

1. Don’t take things personally.

Don’t feel offended when you see your loved one acting so distant. Understand that he or she may not remember you at that time—it’s all part of the disease. Just be as kind as you can and act as normal as possible. If they become too uncomfortable or anxious about not knowing who you are in their life, give them time to rest and leave for the mean time. You may just come back the other day to check if they are feeling better.

2. Limit the distractions.

Things like music or even television can quickly distract or may even cause an individual with dementia to feel unsettled. Find a place where you can be left alone with your loved one. Some of the best memory care facilities have outdoor gardens or living spaces where there are plenty of areas conducive to talking, with fewer
distractions.

3. Do some activities.

Think of something fun—an activity that can help you bond with your loved one. Note that some activities may be fun for them one day but may cause them to feel stressed the next, so be open to changing your plans.

4. Don’t let yourself get caught up in memories.

Keep in mind that your loved one’s memory of who you are doesn’t define your relationship. If they don’t remember certain details well, let it pass instead of correcting them and causing them to feel upset afterwards.

5. Know their caregivers.

Try to get to know the staff in the memory care facility, especially the program or the activity coordinator. They’ll be looking after your loved ones every day, so by having a good rapport with them you will also get to know better on how to treat and behave with your loved one.
