Posted by jeenniwill on February 18th, 2017

While some words can be referred to as exclusively Uber-related, there also exist normal words that might have their meaning altered in the ‘Uber-context’. This simply means that although they are everyday words, they might be used differently in the Uber business world.

So, to acquaint you with some Uber lingo, we will discuss some words in this edition of the Ultimate Uber Dictionary.

 Uber Driver

What does it mean to be an Uber driver? This question is one that many will be quick to answer. Yes, being a driver is not hard to understand, but there are certain requirements to fulfil in order to qualify as an Uber driver. Uber drivers are not in any way employees of Uber. They are independent car owners, who have registered on the Uber platform to get access to riders through the Uber driver app.  Do you want to drive with Uber? Simply click here

 Uber Partner/Entrepreneur

An Uber partner is a registered fleet owner. That is, an individual or group of individuals who have a fleet of vehicles registered on the Uber application. They hire a number of drivers who convey riders just like the regular Uber driver. Are you an Entrepreneur? Do you want to be a part of the ridesharing business? Simply click here to sign up.

 Uber Rating

Uber Rating is a feature of the Uber application that allows riders and drivers the opportunity to rate one another based on their trip experience. The rating system was put in place to ensure that only the most respectful riders and dutiful drivers are using Uber. Ratings are always reported on an average, and neither riders nor drivers will see the individual rating left for a particular trip.

 Uber API

The Uber API is a great innovation that allows third party affiliates to offer Uber services to their users via their own application. In August 2014, Uber released this API and since then, it has allowed its on-demand ride providing services to be integrated into other third party applications. Such applications that have the API on their apps include Tempo, TripAdvisor, OpenTable, Expensify and many others.

 Surge Pricing

Surge pricing is simply a temporary increase in Uber fares. Uber rates usually increase at times when demand cannot be met by the number of drivers active on the road. In an attempt to meet up with demand, Uber raises the cost of ride fares to entice more drivers to get on the roads.

Uber tries their best to ensure that riders are alerted of the most recent price change. This is why you see a notification screen in your app whenever there is surge pricing. It is only if you accept to ride not minding the higher rates that you are connected to a driver.

 Uber Algorithm

This is Uber’s automated price calculation system. It is what regulates the Uber fare rates according to the odds of trip execution. It is also the program responsible for raising the price when the demand is higher than the number of available drivers.

 Zero

Zero is Uber’s term for a rider who opens the app and sees no available cars in their area. This term is mostly used during surge pricing.

 Uber Services

There are multiple Uber services available. These services were designed with the Uber passenger and Uber driver in mind. Different Uber services include UberX, Uber BLACK, UberSUV and the UberSELECT to name a few. Some of these services like the UberBLACK demand higher fares; while the UberX is Uber’s regular service with the fare priced just right.
