The Nuts & Bolts of Green Furniture-Making 

Many modern day furniture makers are looking to the past for inspiration and creative ideas. The canopy platform bed is a perfect example. The role-top desk is another good example. However, the more progressive furniture builders are also looking to the future. They don’t just care about the wellbeing of present-day consumers; they also care about the entire ecosystem, which begins with the Earth herself and ends with us, the crown of creation. Unfortunately, oftentimes, that crown gets tarnished, especially in relation to Nature, and that is a key motivating factor for these progressive furniture makers. They not only choose natural materials but they often choose organically grown resources such as cotton and renewable resources like bamboo and acacia wood. They make these careful choices to make sure that--when the furniture they build falls apart one day in the distant future--what’s left can be recycled, burned as fire wood or biodegrade quickly and then transform into nourishing compost to enrich the soil.

Just like furniture makers, furniture designers are also turning to the past for creative ideas and inspiration, as well as a desire to honor certain traditions, like rugs made of straw or silk. Some of them fit together like simple puzzle pieces, and others use simple but strong dowels or other non-bolt, non-screw hardware items with unusual names, inventive designs and sturdy construction.
