When it comes to office information security, you could use all the help you need. After all, you shouldn’t take chances while disposing off sensitive information at any level. And a compact paper shredder is the best option that you can turn to, for that purpose.

Selecting a paper shredder depends on many factors which more or less revolves around the specific requirements of your office. However, here are the specifications of the shredders that should make it easier for you to decide the one that you want to buy.

1.Type of cut
Copies of confidential paperwork can be destroyed in strips or confetti or be ground so minute that they can pass through a screen. Then, there are disintegrators that reduce the papers to particles so small that they can pass through a mesh! The kind of cut that is achieved with a shredder depends on the kind of blades that are installed in it and the mechanism for which that particular shredder has been designed.

2.Level of security
Essentially, there are up to six different levels of security according to which a shredder can be classified and purchased. These levels of security are defined by the size of the strips or pieces into which the machine shreds the paper. The lowest security level starts with shredding the papers into strips measuring about 3/8” wide, level two would be of 1/8” or 1/3” and likewise, the width goes on reducing with the increasing levels.

3.Capacity
The shredding capacity of the machine refers to the maximum number of sheets that can pass through at one given point of time. The capacity varies from as low as 10 sheets to up to 40-50 sheets. A high capacity paper shredder would be able to handle as many as 100 sheets of paper at a time.

4.Safety features
The safety features of the shredder includes an interlock and a sensor. While the interlock prevents unauthorized use of the machine, the sensor helps prevent injuries by detecting the presence of hands or objects at inappropriate spots.

5.Other considerations
Apart from the specifications that have been listed above, the noise level, the course of warranty being offered for the machine, automatic oilers, casters that make the shredder easy to move and continuous duty motors are some of the other aspects that needs to be kept in mind when you are shopping for paper shredders for home or office use.
