Tips For Correctly Preserving Pashmina Scarves

Anyone who owns Pashmina scarves will know that they’re not ordinary pieces of clothing. Their softness, delicateness, warmth and beauty often mean that they’re something we want to wear over and over again, as well as preserve for future generations to enjoy. These scarves are, however, incredibly sensitive so require proper care and handling. Here, we’ve covered some things to keep in mind when it comes to cleaning and storing your Pashminas:

Cleaning

As the fabric is very delicate, you should always wash Pashmina scarves by hand in a lukewarm water and delicate shampoo solution. After washing, excess water can be removed by rolling the scarf up in a towel and squeezing gently. To dry, spread the garment on a drying rack away from direct heat and sunlight. Don’t let it hang, as this will stretch the fabric. Many people are surprised to learn that it is possible to iron these scarves, which is great because they’re prone to wrinkling – simply place them between two towels and iron away.

Never wash the garment in cold or hot water, as this can lead to shrinking – only lukewarm water (erring on the colder side) should be used.Do not twist or wring them to remove water, as this can stretch them out of shape. Never bleach them, as this can actually affect the softness of the fabric. Never place them in the clothes dryer; instead, they should be air dried. You must also never iron the scarf directly. Don’t wrap the piece up carelessly, as this can cause unsightly wrinkles that are difficult to get out (even with ironing).

Storing

Keep in mind that dampness, sunlight and leakages are all harmful to Pashminas, so these things must be avoided at all costs. Fold them in tissue paper or place them into a polythene bag and store them away from light, dust and damp. This is particularly important during the summer.

You should always clean scarves before putting them into storage, as this will discourage fresh stains from becoming fixed. Be sure to remove any food stains before storage, as these can help to attract moths. Mothballs and cedar chips can also provide some extra protection against infestations.

Tips for Clean & Beautiful Pashmina Scarves

  • Avoid wearing the same Pashmina all the time – after wearing it for one day, give it two or three days rest before wearing it again.
  • Don’t wear these scarves close to rough clothing, metal jewellery, belts and other rough leather items.
  • Keep in mind that some pilling is normal if the Pashmina has been worn regularly (particularly in areas that rub).
  • To avoid pilling, avoid rubbing the scarves on rough clothing, metal accessories, bags and belts.
  • Pills can be removed by manually picking them off – do not rub or brush at them, as this will make them worse.

By following the above instructions and tips, you will be able to keep your Pashmina scarves in excellent condition. Not only will this ensure that you can wear them for many years, it will mean that they’re still beautiful when it’s time to pass them on to the next generation. As genuine Pashmina garments are a little on the expensive side, we understand that keeping them in tiptop condition is a primary concern – ask for assistance or advice if required.
