How to Find a Unique Study Abroad Program?

Posted by Rishabh Sharma on March 16th, 2017

In recent years, more and more non-traditional study abroad programs have emerged. From placing the students in less traveled destinations to focusing on experimental learning, students who need a less traditional study abroad experience have many options.

But what makes these non-traditional programs different? How to you make your study abroad experience adventurous? We have some ideas:

Travel: Go where few people go:

Generally, the study abroad programs include a few excursions to famous historical places over the weekend. Excursions are a staple of study overseas programs. If you wish to learn about life outside the country's main attractions or participating in remote travel study sites as a part of the course, then yes that exists. Many programs are getting creative with the type of excursions that offer. You need to seek this out.

Academics: Look for Experimental, Hands-On Learning:

The hands-on approach allows students to take charge of their own education and explore personal interests. If you are studying tropical ecology, would you not want to actually see a tropical forest?

Culture: Choose the program that facilitates cultural immersion:

Sometimes it is difficult to come out of your comfort zone, even if it means interacting with the students and locals who don't speak English as well as you do. But this way you will leave your program with regrets. But these non-traditional programs can help you with this. Some programs set up internships for students, a volunteer project, or involve local community members or students in lessons or activities. Home stays are also a way of giving students full cultural immersion.

The emerging non-traditional programs are expanding student's horizon by offering them an intensive, in-context balance between travel, academics, and culture.
